It was not until the beginning of the 20th century that the museum’s collection of German painting was decisively enlarged and then gradually built up to the significance it enjoys today. The museum owes much of the credit for this to its then director Konrad Lange (1901-1907). Thanks to his initiative, the museum succeeded in acquiring numerous works formerly in the possession of the Church. Konrad Lange’s interest was focussed primarily on accentuating the museum’s collection of early Swabian painting. This visionary approach was resumed after the Second World War and has been continued right up until the present day.
